The phrase ‘west coast, best coast‘ is true in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to taking in college football games. There is no greater pleasure than waking up and watching college football from dusk till dawn, and Such a treat is only found in one region of the United States: the west.
This is not an argument about where the best football is played. The east coast and southern portions of the United States produce the most formidable teams, at least for the time being. But the ability to watch college football from morning to night is an experience unlike any other and is replicated nowhere but the beautiful west coast.
Imagine waking up at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning, making yourself a pot of coffee and immediately turning on the TV. Instead of three hours of pregame shows you are greeted by the sight of Death Valley. No outlandish predictions, shallow analysis or lots of yelling. There is just Death Valley, Clemson‘s home stadium, and the sounds of head coach Dabo Sweeney barking at his players in a matchup against Virginia.
Or maybe it’s the raucous crowd at a Wisconsin game, dancing like crazy to Jump Around at the start of the fourth quarter, as is tradition.
The point is, getting to watch football from 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM is a dream come true for diehard college football fans. East coast fans don’t have this pleasure (unless they are nursing a particularly rough night before).
West Coast football has the Pac-12 nightcap
No one is arguing that PAC-12 football is better than the SEC or ACC. However, it is a huge advantage that west coast fans can watch SEC/ACC football all day, and are still awake for marquee evening matchups between west coast schools like USC, UW, WSU and Stanford.
While the Pac-12 is considering playing more morning games to engage east coast fans, west coast fans already get to enjoy a full scope of college football’s elite from dawn until dusk.
If it were up to me, I’d much rather wake up with football already on. It’s much better than watching pregame fluff. Even worse is when you miss a prolific effort from a Pac-12 quarterback because you went to sleep. West coast college football fans get the complete college football experience.
So yes, watching college football is one of many situations where ‘west coast, best coast’ applies.
