Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 10: Nobody is Safe From the Upsets

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 10

What a crazy week in the Pac-12. Betters everywhere probably lost a mint with all the upsets in week 10. Oregon State beat Colorado. Arizona destroyed Oregon. And Cal beat Washington without scoring an offensive touchdown. The Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 10 is based on three things: quality wins, schedule played, and dominance. The “eye test” and preseason rankings are not factored into the Unafraid Show’s rankings. I know some of you are used to the biased rankings, but you won’t find those here.

You can see last weeks rankings here.

Pac-12 Bowl Projections are after the rankings.

12. Oregon State (2-6)

(W) 41-34 Colorado

I apologize to the Beavers. Last week I said, “The Beavers blew their last shot at a Pac-12 win in 2018.” I was wrong. Jonathan Smith inserted Jake Luton at quarterback after halftime, and he torched Colorado’s defense. I know that game is an outlier, but there is part of me that believes the Beavers can beat USC this week.

11. Colorado (5-3)

(L) 34-41 Oregon State

Oregon State is undoubtedly the worst defense in the Pac-12. Colorado lost a 21 point lead 3rd quarter lead Oregon State and ultimately lost the game. They were still without mid-season All American wide receiver Lavishka Shenault (toe), but there are no excuses for that loss. The Buffaloes have lost three straight games and will need a fantastic effort to get a win against Arizona.

If Mike MacIntyre can’t coach his team to a bowl game his seat will go from warm to scorching hot.

10. UCLA (2-6)

(L) 10-41 Utah

After winning two consecutive games UCLA ran into the Utah buzzsaw. It didn’t help that they were without their electric true freshman quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson. We don’t know if he will be back this week against Oregon. Chip Kelly will likely pull out all the stops as he returns to Oregon for the first time as an opposing coach. Everyone in the stadium should be prepared for fireworks. UCLA has to believe they can win the game after they saw what Arizona did to Oregon. However, if DTR is not in the lineup, the Bruins don’t stand a chance of walking out of Autzen Stadium with a win.

I will be in attendance at this game and cannot wait.

9. USC (4-4)

(L) 34-38 Arizona State

It almost feels like Clay Helton is coaching on borrowed time. He has taken over playcalling duties for the Trojans. So, now there are no more excuses allowed for USC’s offense to struggle. They head to Corvallis Saturday to play the Beavers. I would say there is no chance USC loses this game, but Oregon State did beat Colorado last week. There is good news though. USC gets starting quarterback JT Daniels back from concussion protocol for this weeks’ game.

Fans are disappointed, and Athletic Director Lynn Swann may be painted into a corner. He may have to make a change at head coach on the tarmac at the airport (Lane Kiffin style) if the Trojans fall this weekend.

8. Arizona State (4-4)

(W) 38-34 USC

Arizona State had their most impressive offensive performance of the season against USC. N’Keal Harry showed up and showed out. He caught for a touchdown, returned a punt for a touchdown, and made one of the most difficult catches of the 2018 season.

Herm Edwards has his team sitting at 4-4, with a chance to win the Pac-12 South. The future is extremely bright for the Sun Devils. This week a red-hot Utah team comes to Tempe. Will they be able to continue the Pac-12 upsets and defeat the Utes?

7. Washington (6-3)

(L) 10-12 Cal

The Huskies are light years away from the team many people expected to compete for a national championship. Their defense has been the only thing keeping them in games. If not for stout defensive play this team would be 3-5 instead of 5-3. Washington’s offense is painful to watch. Jake Browning has been underwhelming. And the offense has been unable to dominate rushing the football whether Miles Gaskins is in the lineup or not.

Washington gets a chance to bounce back against Stanford. Chris Peterson will have his team prepared, and this will be a heavyweight title fight.

6. Cal (5-3)

(W) 12-10 Cal

If I told you Cal would beat Washington without scoring an offensive touchdown you would have called me a crazy fool. But, the Golden Bears did just that. The job Justin Wilcox and his staff have done with this defense is remarkable. They don’t have 4 and 5* athletes at every position, but they are well coached and play hard. Cal has the top-ranked defense against the pass in the Pac-12. However, they have to travel to Pullman to play the top passer in the nation, Gardner Minshew. Something has to give.

If Cal wins, they will be bowl eligible. That would be a huge accomplishment for the team to make a bowl game out of the most competitive division in college football.

5. Oregon (5-3)

(L) 15-44 Arizona

What on earth happened to the Ducks last week in Tucson? Oregon’s loss to Arizona would have been the most shocking result of the week had Colorado not lost a 21 point halftime lead to Oregon State.

Oregon’s offense has been virtually non-existent the first half of the last two weeks. They have punted nearly 15 times in two games. That is a far departure for the offense that was leading the conference in scoring. Coach Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo need to right the ship this week against UCLA. The Ducks must run the football early and often so Justin Herbert can get open passing lanes for play-action passes.

The next 4 games are crucial to cementing Ducks fans trust in this coaching staff.

4. Arizona (4-5)

(W) 44-15 Oregon

The Pac-12 is insane. How else can you explain Arizona losing to UCLA in week 9, then beating Oregon badly the very next week? The Arizona defense had their most outstanding performance of the year against Oregon. They were fast and extremely physical which was a departure from the swiss cheese defense they displayed through their first eight games.

Now the biggest question is will the Wildcats return back to the team that earned a sub .500 record or have they turned a corner. This week they get Colorado on Friday night.

3. Stanford (5-3)

(L) 38-41 Washington State

David Shaw proved again why he is a great coach. Stanford had been unable to run the ball as effectively as they had in the past. Instead of continuing to beat his teams’ head against a wall, Shaw decided to throw the football a lot. Stanford was extremely successful throwing the ball against Washington State, which is one of the top pass defenses in the conference. KJ Costello threw the ball 43 times for 323 yards and four touchdowns.

Stanford is tough and consistent even in defeat.

2. Utah (6-2)

(W) 41-10 UCLA

The Utes are continuing to steamroll through Pac-12 opponents. They disposed of UCLA pretty easily at the Rose Bowl. Utah’s defense is one of the best in the nation. Zack Moss carried the Utah offense on his back. He finished with 211 rushing yards and three touchdowns. If Utah can run the ball this successfully, they will be tough to beat.

The recipe to beat the Utes is stopping their running game. SOmeone can force Tyler Huntley to throw the ball 30+ times he will throw a few interceptions.

1. Washington State (7-1)

(W) 41-38 Stanford

At this point, I am rooting for the Cougars to finish the season 12-1 including the Pac-12 Championship. The conference needs a representative in the College Football Championship and Washington State is the last hope. It is increasingly frustrating for Pac-12 fans to see the conference with the most parity to consistently be dismissed in conversation.

Mike Leach is an offensive genius, and it will be interesting to see his ‘Air Raid’ offense against the likes of Alabama and Clemson. Gardener Minshew is lighting up the stat sheet for nearly 400 passing yards per game. They will get a real test this week from the stingiest pass defense in the Pac-12.

This could be Leach’s last season in Pullman if the USC job or other top jobs become available.

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 10: Welcome To The Party, Northwestern

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 10

The Big Ten Power Rankings Week 10 are so volatile. In the Big Ten West, the team in sole possession of first place is not Wisconsin or Iowa. It’s not Purdue or Minnesota. The first place team in the Big Ten West is Northwestern. After starting the season 1-3, Pat Fitzgerald has led the Wildcats to four straight victories to put their conference record to 5-1. The Wildcats now control their own destiny to the Big Ten Title game. However, that’s all put on hold this week as Northwestern welcomes a national championship contender to Ryan Field Field on Saturday night in Notre Dame. Crazy things have happened this year so don’t count out Northwestern just yet.

Here are last week’s Big Ten Power Rankings for reference.

14. Rutgers (1-7)

Bye

On a positive note, Rutgers could not lose because they had a bye week. I’m not going to pretend like I have the answer to fixing the football program at Rutgers. I don’t think Chris Ash is the answer, but then again, who can do a better job? The better question might be who wants the job. We’ll find out soon enough. Rutgers travels to Camp Randall to play Wisconsin on Saturday.

13. Nebraska (2-6)

Beat Bethune-Cookman, 45-9

Nebraska won its second game on Saturday, but before bragging about that victory, let’s pump the brakes. Bethune-Cookman is an FCS team, not a Power 5 school. So Nebraska did its job by beating an inferior opponent by over 30 points. For a team that only has two wins, Nebraska has to take its victories where they can get them, but let’s see what happens when they travel to Columbus to play a motivated Ohio State team on Saturday.

12. Illinois (3-5)

Lost to Maryland, 63-33

Illinois played well on offense. 261 yards passing, 232 yards rushing, and 33 points is a great day for most teams. However, it was as if the Illini had 8 guys on defense because Maryland ran wild all day. The Illini allowed Maryland to rush for 431 yards and 5 TDs and the Terps finished the game with 712 total yards. You might have thought Illinois was playing a Big 12 school by looking at those huge numbers. Here are the last three opponents’ score totals against Illinois: 46, 49, 63. Illinois needs to learn how to stop someone asap. Illinois plays Minnesota at home on Saturday afternoon.

11. Indiana (4-5)

Lost to Minnesota, 38-31

What has happened to Indiana? The Hoosiers started the year at 3-0. Since then, Indiana has lost 5 of the last 6 games with their 1 win coming against Rutgers. The defense was supposed to be the strength of the team, but in the 5 losses, the Hoosiers have surrendered more than 33 points each game. I’m no expert, but it’s hard to win games when you can’t stop the other team. The Hoosiers have a much-needed bye.

10. Minnesota (4-4)

Beat Indiana, 38-31

Minnesota desperately needed to win a game after four straight losses. Behind quarterback Tanner Morgan’s 3 TD day including a late 4th quarter TD pass to Rashod Bateman with under two minutes left, the Golden Gophers ended their losing streak and picked up their first conference win of the season. Morgan started for the injured true freshman Zack Annexstad. It’s all about baby steps for this program. Win two more games and they’re in a bowl. Minnesota will play Illinois on the road in another winnable game.

9. Maryland (5-3)

Beat Illinois, 63-33

Total domination for the Terps as the offense accounted for 712 yards (!!!). 431 yards rushing and 5 TDs is beyond impressive, but the stat that stands out for me is Kasim Hill’s 281 yards passing and 3 TDs. Maryland needs Hill to be productive through the air to so for him to put up numbers like that is a luxury. Don’t forget that Maryland beat Texas to start the season. The Terps are talented when they put it altogether. Maryland welcomes Michigan State to College Park on Saturday.

8. Purdue (4-4)

Lost to Michigan State, 23-13

Oh how a week makes a difference. A week after thrashing Ohio State, Purdue ran into a buzzsaw aka the Michigan State defense. Quarterback David Blough had his worst game of the year, throwing for 277 yards, 0 TDs, and 3 INTs. The running game was also nowhere to be found as they only managed to rush for 62 yards. Purdue will look to get back on track in a huge matchup with Big Ten West implications on the line as the Boilermakers face Iowa at home.

7. Wisconsin (5-3)

Lost to Northwestern, 31-17

Wisconsin is known for running the ball, controlling the clock, and playing tough defense. However, against Northwestern, Wisconsin was beat at their own game as the Wildcats dominated the Badgers from start to finish. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook was out on Saturday, which proved to be a huge loss for the team as backup Jack Coan could only muster 158 yards though the air. Now, Wisconsin no longer controls their own destiny in the Big Ten West. They need to win out. Wisconsin plays Rutgers at home on Saturday.

6. Michigan State (5-3)

Beat Purdue, 23-13

I am going to write “Michigan State is one of the weirdest teams in college football” every week because that’s the only thought that comes to mind when describing the Spartans. The Michigan State offense could not do anything right against Michigan, but against Purdue, the Spartans outgained the 2nd best offense in the Big Ten. The difference was redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi, who started for the injured Brian Lewerke, and his 300+ yards passing and 2 TDs. Michigan State travels to College Park on Saturday to play Maryland.

5. Northwestern (5-3)

Beat Wisconsin, 31-17

Northwestern, welcome to the top of the Big Ten West. They did not have to squeak out a win as they did in the previous weeks. Northwestern dominated Wisconsin from start to finish as they now sit atop the Big Ten West standings. The Northwestern offense line dominated the line of scrimmage all day as the Northwestern offense outgained the Wisconsin offense in rushing, passing, and total yards. Northwestern does not play in conference this weekend so a win or loss won’t hurt their Big Ten resume, but the Wildcats will have a chance to put the whole country on notice as they host Notre Dame on Saturday night.

4. Iowa (6-2)

Lost to Penn State, 30-24

For a team that usually wins ugly, defensive battles, Iowa came out on the wrong side of the spectrum as Penn State knocked off the Hawkeyes in a close game. Surprisingly, Iowa had more rushing, passing, and total yards than Penn State. The loss sets Iowa back in the Big Ten West as they fall in a tie for second behind first-place Northwestern. However, those two teams will play in two weeks. Iowa has a difficult road test this Saturday as they travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue.

3. Penn State (6-2)

Beat Iowa, 30-24

Remember when I said Penn State could play spoiler in the Big Ten? Well, that theory got off to a hot start this past Saturday as they took down Iowa, who is fighting to represent the Big Ten West in the Big Ten Conference Championship. Despite playing injured, Trace McSorley was able to gut out a victory on a rainy and chilly day in Happy Valley. Once again, Penn State will have a chance to disrupt the conference if they can knock off Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon.

2. Ohio State (7-1)

Bye

After a bye week, the Ohio State Buckeyes are out for revenge after getting waxed by Purdue. Was the loss a fluke or was a sign of a downward trend in the future? For now, I’m leaning towards a fluke because I still believe with Dwayne Haskins at quarterback, this team can compete with anyone in the country. Ohio State plays in Columbus on Saturday against Nebraska.

1. Michigan (7-1)

Bye

No changes at the top. Michigan is still the top team in the Big Ten. With the best defense in the country, opposing teams have struggled to accumulate yards against the Wolverines all year as the Michigan defense allows an average of 220.0 yards per game, which is the lowest average in the country. With the luxury of the top defense in the country, Shea Patterson and the offense don’t necessarily need to be electric on offense as opposed to just being efficient. Michigan has a huge test this week as they welcome Penn State to the Big House on Saturday afternoon.

All eyes will be on Northwestern this Saturday night as they look to disrupt the College Football Playoff if they can knock off Notre Dame.

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 9: New King of the Castle…For Now

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 9

The Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 9 is based on three things: quality wins, schedule played, and dominance. The “eye test” and preseason rankings are not factored into the Unafraid Show’s rankings. I know some of you are used to the biased rankings, but you won’t find those here.

You can see last weeks rankings here.

Pac-12 Bowl Projections are after the rankings.

12. Oregon State (1-6)

(L) Cal 7-49

The Beavers blew their last shot at a Pac-12 win in 2018. They got hammered by Cal. Oregon State is the best team in the Pac-12 rushing the football, but could not do so against Cal. The Beavers are still last in the Pac-12 in total defense, rush defense, pass defense, and nearly every other important defensive statistic. Head coach Jonathan Smith has his work cut out for him in recruiting.

11. Arizona (3-5)

(L) 30-31 UCLA

Rhett Rodriguez got his first start of the season at quarterback, and the Arizona offense looked good. He personally did not have a fantastic game as he finished 15/34 with 231 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns and interceptions. However, if not for a fumble on a sure touchdown, and multiple penalties on big plays the Wildcats could have beat UCLA.

The Ducks head down to Tucson this week. Will Khalil Tate be back in the lineup or will he be sidelined for another week?

10. Cal (4-3)

When you look at the 10th ranked Pac-12 team, you might assume they are terrible. That is far from the case for Cal. They are much improved from the cellar dwellers under Sonny Dykes as head coach. They play in the Pac-12 north, which is the toughest division in college football. So, it is going to be extremely difficult to win games.

Cal’s pass defense is 4th best in the Pac-12 in total defense and 2nd against the pass. There is a lot to be excited about for the future of the program. If the Golden Bears can find two wins against Washington, Washington State, USC, Stanford, and Colorado, Justin Wilcox will make his first bowl game as Cal’s head coach.

9. Arizona State (3-4)

(L) 13-20 Stanford

All four of the Sun Devils losses have come by exactly seven points. They are within striking distance in every game. Arizona State is just not making enough plays to consistently win football games. It is not one particular side of the ball to blame. Both the offense and defense have shared responsibility for the losses. Manny Wilkens will need some 300-yard passing games if ASU is going to win three of their next five games (USC, Utah, UCLA, Oregon, Arizona) to get bowl eligible.

8. UCLA (2-5)

(W) 31-30 Arizona

It is a winning streak. The Bruins have won two games in a row, and their offense is running and throwing the ball well. Chip Kelly has his team headed in the right direction. It is not all good news for UCLA. True freshman starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson left the game and never returned. And the Bruins defense allowed big play after big play by Arizona. You could drive a tractor through some of the running lanes.

UCLA has Utah coming in town this week. What if they mess around and…

7. Colorado (5-2)

(L) 13-27 Washington

Colorado performed admirably on the road against Washington. They were without multiple starters including mid-season All-American wide receiver Lavishka Shenault and were still within four points deep into the 4th quarter. Steven Montez deserves a lot of praise for the Buffaloes 5-2 start. This season he has a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio, and has eliminated a lot of the silly mistakes he made last season.

Colorado should be bowl eligible after they play Oregon State this weekend. Mike MacIntyre will have at least one more season in Boulder.

6. USC (4-3)

(L) 28-41 Utah

The USC fan base is in full panic mode. They are questioning Clay Helton and his ability to lead the Trojans back to the promised land. It is extremely puzzling how USC has the most talented team in the Pac-12 but isn’t getting result commensurate with that on the field. They have had trouble running the football in the majority of their games.

To make matters even worse, lost JT Daniels and Matt Fink to injury against Utah. USC will likely have to start their 3rd string quarterback Jack Sears Saturday against Arizona State.

It is going to be a long rest of the season for USC.

5. Stanford (5-2)

(W) 20-13 Arizona State

The Cardinal have played seven games, and Bryce Love is leading the team in rushing with a lowly 348 yards. 2018 Stanford cannot run the football effectively. It is time to give up hope that will change this season. Trying to run the ball so much has continuously kept Stanford in 3rd and long situations, which they are last in Pac-12 conversion %.

It is time to for Davis Shaw to fully invest in letting KJ Costello pass the ball on early downs. They need to feed JJ Arcega-Whiteside until the defense loosens up on the run game.

4. Utah (5-2)

(W) 41-28 USC

I cannot fully buy into the Utes offense, even after three straight 40 point outings. However, I am fully buying into them winning the Pac-12 south. They scored a bunch all those points against three defenses that no one would consider top tier. Stanford is uncharacteristically 11th in total defense, Arizona can’t stop a nosebleed, and USC had some of their best defenders out. But, when you play bad defenses, you should treat them like bad defenses, and Utah deserves credit for that.

I am absolutely gushing over their defense. They are only allowing 282 yards per game which is 7th in the nation. And the Utes are only allowing 17.7 points per game.

3. Washington (5-2)

(W) 27-13 Colorado

There was never a doubt in my mind the Huskies would beat Colorado. However, the game was much closer than most people anticipated. It was 17-13 until 3:50 to go in the 4th quarter. Washington then piled on some late style points for those who didn’t see the game. A lot of credit goes to Washington’s second-best Pac-12 defense. Their middle linebacker Ben Bur-Kirven is leading the nation in tackles.

Watching the Huskies is a lot like watching the Michigan Wolverines play this year. You recognize the talent, and the defense is one of the best in the nation. However, their lack of explosiveness offensively hinders both from being national championship threats.

If the Huskies win out, they will be headed to the Pac-12 title game.

2. Oregon (5-2)

(L) 20-34 Washington State

Oregon got a huge wakeup call in the first half of the Washington State game. They were completely shut down offensively. At the half, the Ducks had only gained 50 yards on five possessions. And their defense allowed points on every drive in the first half after the first series interception. There were miscues and missed opportunities all over the place.

After the first half ended 27-0, the Ducks came out and looked like the team ranked #8 in the Unafraid Show top 10 and #12 in the AP poll. They dominated the Cougars in the 2nd half but had dug a hole far too deep.

Now the Ducks need a lot of things to fall their way to get a New Years Day Six Bowl birth.

1. Washington State (6-1)

(W) 34-20 Oregon

There is one stat that shows why Washington State has been so successful this year. Through 7 games Washington State is only allowing Gardner Minshew to be sacked once every 76 snaps. Mike Leach does a masterful job making the opposing defense guard the entire field. He designs plays that get the ball out quickly and have an outlet for when pressure comes. The Cougars are throwing for over 400 yards per game while being the best pass defense in the conference.

I have said it since Week 1; the Cougars appear to be turning a tragedy into a special season. They now have the inside track to the Rose Bowl or College Football Playoffs, and have earned the top stop in the Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 9.

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 9: Perfection is Over But Playoffs Still in Sight

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 9

Did that really just happen? The Big Ten Power Rankings Week 9 got flipped upside down.

Yup, that actually happened. For the second straight year, Ohio State was blown out by an unranked opponent on the road. This doesn’t derail their chances for a Big Ten Title, but it may throw a wrench in their plans to make the College Football Playoff. The blowout loss to Iowa from a season ago played a major factor in Ohio State’s absence from the playoff. Will this loss to Purdue have the same impact? Only time will tell.

Here are last week’s Big Ten Power Rankings for reference.

14. Rutgers (1-7)

Lost to Northwestern, 18-15

Rutgers almost won a Big Ten game. They should have won the game against Northwestern. Rutgers had the lead entering the fourth quarter before surrendering the game-winning touchdown with 8 minutes to go. If there are moral victories, at least Rutgers did not lose by double digits. Rutgers has a bye week.

13. Nebraska (1-6)

Beat Minnesota, 53-28

Scott Frost, congratulations on your first win at Nebraska. It should be the first of many to come in the future. Nebraska’s offense is one of the best in the Big Ten, and they proved that in their 53-28 win over Minnesota. Nebraska’s offense totaled 659 yards for the game, led by their sensational freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, who threw for 276 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown. Now that the monkey is off their back, can Nebraska make it two straight? The Cornhuskers play Bethune-Cookman at home on Saturday.

12. Illinois (3-4)

Lost to Wisconsin, 49-20

Illinois losing by 29 points to Wisconsin came as a surprise to no one. Wisconsin laid an egg the game before so many expected the frustrated Badgers to take out their aggression on the Illini. That’s exactly what happened. Here’s the good news. Four of the next five games come against unranked opponents. Can the Illini make it to a bowl game? The journey starts on Saturday when the Illini go on the road to face Maryland.

11. Minnesota (3-4)

Lost to Nebraska, 53-28

There has been no rowing of the boat as of late. PJ Fleck’s squad started the season with three straight wins, but after Saturday’s loss against Nebraska, Minnesota has lost 4 straight games. There was one lone bright spot for the Golden Gophers. Backup quarterback Tanner Morgan replaced Zack Annexstad at halftime and led Minnesota on two straight scoring drives. The defense allowed a mind-blowing 659 yards of offense to a Nebraska team that was 0-6 coming into the game. Minnesota plays Indiana at home in their version of “Friday Night Lights.”

10. Indiana (4-4)

Lost to Penn State, 33-28

Indiana missed an opportunity to register a quality win against a Big Ten opponent. I seem to be writing that same phrase every week because once again, Indiana lost a close game in the Big Ten. This time, it was Penn State who pulled out a 5 point victory of the Hoosiers. With a 1-4 record in the Big Ten, Indiana still has not figured out how to win the close game against a tough opponent, and it continues to cost them week after week. To make matters worse, freshman quarterback Michael Penix is out for the season with an ACL tear. Indiana travels to TCF Bank Stadium to take on Minnesota under the lights on Friday night.

9. Maryland (4-3)

Lost to Iowa, 23-0

With a chance to shock the Big Ten, Maryland was nowhere to be found on Saturday as Iowa controlled the game from start to finish. Maryland’s rushing game, which is one of the best in the nation, struggled mightily, accumulating 68 yards. The Terps had only 115 yards of total offense and had the ball for less than 20 minutes. That’s a recipe for disaster. Maryland plays Illinois in College Park on Saturday.

8. Michigan State (4-3)

Lost to Michigan, 21-7

Michigan State is one of the weirdest teams in college football. Two weeks ago, they pulled off the last second upset victory over Penn State. This past weekend, the Spartans accumulated less than 100 yards of total offense on their way to a defeat at the hands of Michigan Wolverines. For a team that had so much potential coming into the year, this season has been nothing short of a disappointment. Michigan State plays Purdue in East Lansing on Saturday.

7. Northwestern (4-3)

Beat Rutgers, 18-15

Northwestern is not flashy by any stretch of the imagination. They love to flirt with disaster this season. On Saturday, the Wildcats were losing to Rutgers (yes, Rutgers) 15-10 heading into the 4th quarter. However, the Wildcats once again found a way to win as running back Isaiah Bowser scored a 5-yard touchdown in the middle of the 4th quarter to take the lead, 18-15, which ended up being the difference. It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win. Northwestern is now tied for 1st in the Big Ten West. The Wildcats welcome Wisconsin to Ryan Field in an extremely important matchup this weekend.

6. Purdue (4-3)

Beat Ohio State, 49-20

Purdue just changed the entire landscape of the college football season with a blowout win over Ohio State. Purdue’s offense not only scored at will, but they out-dueled the prolific Ohio State offense. The defense is still spotty at times, but it is hard to outscore a Boilermaker team that averages 36.0 points per game. After starting the season 0-3, Purdue has now won 4 straight games and is back in the hunt for a Big Ten title. Purdue travels to play Michigan State on Saturday.

5. Wisconsin (5-2)

Beat Illinois, 49-20

Wisconsin returned to their winning ways after the embarrassing loss to Michigan. Alex Hornibrook was much better against Illinois, throwing for 3 TDs on the day. The Badgers still control their own destiny in the Big Ten West. Win out, and they will play in the Big Ten title game. Wisconsin travels to Northwestern on Saturday in a game with huge conference implications in the Big Ten West.

4. Penn State (5-2)

Beat Indiana. 33-28

This was a lot closer than expected. Penn State overcame a second-half deficit to defeat Indiana in Bloomington. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Nittany Lions. It will be hard for Penn State to play in the Big Ten championship, but they can play spoiler to a lot of teams in these upcoming weeks. It all starts with the game against Iowa on Saturday at Happy Valley.

3. Iowa (6-1)

Beat Maryland, 23-0

Run the ball and play good defense. That’s the Big Ten way. The Iowa rushing attack ran for 224 yards, and the defense pitched a shutout as the Hawkeyes defeated the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Iowa still needs another Wisconsin loss to overtake the Badgers in the Big Ten West, but Northwestern and Purdue both have one conference loss as well. As things begin to play themselves out, will Iowa be the last Big Ten West team standing? Iowa travels to Happy Valley for a monster game with Penn State on Saturday afternoon.

2. Ohio State (7-1)

Lost to Purdue, 49-20

Wow. I’m still speechless after Saturday night. For the second straight year, Ohio State is in danger of missing the College Football Playoff thanks to a blowout loss. Last year, Iowa scored 55 on the Buckeyes. This past week, Purdue put up 49 points in a dominant 49-20 win over the Buckeyes. Last year proved that one loss could change everything. Ohio State will now have to not only win out, but win in convincing fashion to compete with the likes of Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame. Ohio State has a bye week.

1. Michigan (7-1)

Beat Michigan State, 21-7

I said last week that Michigan was the second team in the Big Ten. Now, they are the best team in the Big Ten. It’s amazing how things change so quickly in college football. Michigan won an ugly game against in-state rival Michigan State the other day, which was Harbaugh’s second win over the Spartans in his tenure at Ann Arbor. This game was personal as Harbaugh, and Mark Dantonio pretty much hate each other at this point. The Wolverines are in the driver’s seat to the Big Ten Championship. Michigan has a well-deserved bye week.

Will the Big Ten miss the College Football Playoff for the second straight year? If Michigan and Ohio State both pick up a second loss, no Big Ten team will make the playoff. If you want to root for the success of the conference, you better pray Michigan and Ohio State to win out the rest of the year until their matchup in late November.

Five Up Five Down: The 5 Best and 5 Worst NFL Teams Week Seven

NFL Teams Week Seven

Five Up Five Down

Five Up Five Down: The 5 Best and 5 Worst NFL Teams Week Seven is where we rank the five best and five worst teams in the NFL. Anybody can list the best teams. It takes real skill to sort through the mess that is the bottom of the league.   Week seven is hours away from kicking off in the Mile High City. What did we learn from Week 6? Tom Brady has nimble feet, Aaron Rodgers is the comeback kid, Todd Gurley is the best running back on the planet, and the Ravens have just sacked Marcus Mariota yet again.

5 UP:  The 5 Best NFL Teams Week Seven

1. LOS ANGELES RAMS (6-0) Last Week:  2nd

The Rams are proving to be the best team in the NFL for many reasons. One of those reasons is they find ways to win games that they don’t play in very well. One guy who was dominant was Todd Gurley, who was again the best running back on planet setting career highs (208 yards 2 TD’s 7.4 Avg.) as he ran up and all over the Denver Broncos. He covered up for Jared Goff who was sacked five times and only completed 50% of his passes and threw an ugly interception. It marks the 2nd straight week of bad play from Jared after his fantastic performance against the Vikings. Goff has still put up impressive numbers on the year (1,928 Yards 12 TD’s 5 INT 110.9 Ratings) but with Gurley running this well, his numbers might decrease anyways. The Rams WR core has been beaten up recently with Copper Kupp out this week which has not helped Jared either.

The defense has played big in moments when they’ve had to. Consistency has been an issue all year long, and Wade Phillips is working on it. The Rams will finish up a long three-game road trip in San Francisco. They are 10.5 point favorites against the (1-5) 49ers who have played better than their record would indicate. The two rivals have met 137 times with the 49ers winning 69 of those contests.

2. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (5-1) Last Week: 1st

If you could ever build a case that you’ve won after losing, the Chiefs proved that this week. Patrick Mahomes II legacy is still growing when he nearly outdueled the GOAT. He threw for 352 yards and 4 TD’s (1,865 yards 18 TD’s 4 INT’s 112.2 Rating) this kid is beyond exceptional!  Another positive for the Chiefs in the 43-40 loss was the running game appeared in the form of Kareem Hunt (10 carries 80 Yards 8 AVG). If the Chiefs can balance the attack and eat up more time on the clock, they will win more close games. They gave Tom Brady too much time to beat them on Sunday night.

A high-powered offense again picked apart the Kansas City Chiefs defense. I realize the Chiefs are usually tough on 3rd down conversions (allowed over 50% to the Pats on Sunday night) but when you give up nearly 500 yards that will end up being a losing formula. The challenges keep coming for KC who will welcome a good Cincinnati Bengals (4-2) team to town. Chiefs are 6 point favorites, but Cincy leads the all-time series 15-13. Though they moved one spot down our list of Five Up, the Chiefs proved even in a loss they are a team who will contend for the top spot thanks to the most exciting player in the NFL.

3. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (4-1) Last Week: 4th

The Saints enjoyed the Bye Week and gained a spot in our 5 Up category thanks to a Bengals loss in Pittsburgh. This week, Drew Brees and company will have to deal with a red-hot defense that just racked up 11 sacks last week. New Orleans’ schedule is brutal coming up with three of the next four crucial games on the road against (@Ravens, @Vikings, Rams, @Bengals). We will learn a lot about the Saints Super Bowl chances in the next month. Drew Brees, when its all said and done, would like to be #1 on the top 10 quarterbacks list. Ravens have dominated the series five games to one and are two-point favorites at home.

4. CINCINNATI BENGALS (4-2) Last Week: 3rd

So the Bengals lost to the Steelers last week, what else is new? They played very well but lost on a late Antonio Brown touchdown. I am merciful; they only dropped one spot in our rankings. The defense let down the Bengals against Pittsburgh. Three Steelers had over 100 yards by run and pass, which is not a good sign for Marvin Lewis team. The Bengals have a lot of young talent and Tyler Boyd is starting to become a household name.

The offense was not without blame as well. Andy Dalton was very inconsistent and wound up with just 229 yards through the air. Joe Mixon was, in my opinion, not used enough (11 carries for 64 Yards). If the Bengals don’t want to slide out of the top five, they will need to establish the run and make Joe Mixon part of a ball attack against Kansas City this weekend.

5. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (4-2) Last Week: Unranked

Well, it was just a matter of time before the Patriots were going to climb into the rankings. It was not an easy decision because the Chargers and Ravens are not far behind the Patriots. They have some serious questions on the defensive side of the ball. If there is any coach who can get all the questions answered and the mess cleaned up, it’s Bill Belichick. Check back in November and that defense will probably be corrected as it is every year.

When you have Tom Brady as your QB, it covers up a lot of weaknesses. He has some old weapons back in Edelman and some new ones to play with in Josh Gordon. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it looks like Brady is getting even better. What’s in that TB 12? What is also very appealing for the Patriots is the fact rookie running back Sony Michel is looking like a stud. The Patriots will travel to the Windy City to challenge the Chicago Bears (3-2). An aspect to watch is how the Pats will block Khalil Mack. New England is two-point favorites for week seven and leads the all-time series between the two teams, 9-4. The Biggest game between these two, of course, was Super Bowl 20 when the Bears trounced New England 46-10.

Closing in the top 5 this week:

Baltimore Ravens (4-2), LA Chargers (4-2), Miami Dolphins (4-2)

5 DOWN: The 5 Worst NFL Teams Week Six

28. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (1-5) Last Week: Unranked

The start of the 2018-2019 season has not been kind to the Colts. It looks like Andrew Luck is still trying to find his consistency, but he has very little to work with offensively. Indy is 30th running the ball which puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the shoulders of the franchise Quarterback (1,792 yards, 16 TD’s 8 INTS 88,8 Rating). Luck has been under duress as well, already being sacked 19 times so far this year.

The Colts defense has not offered any big stops when the team needs it most. They give up a lot of yards on the ground and provide no pass rush to create sacks (10 as a team) and turnovers. The perfect get well card is coming to town as the equally inept Buffalo Bills (2-4) enter Lucas Oil Field. The Colts are favored by seven and a half points, but the Bills lead the series 37-31-1.

29. N.Y. GIANTS (1-5) Last Week: 29th

The Giants are a complete disaster right now as week seven begins. After playing better in Carolina, they came home in a must-win versus the Eagles and everyone other than Saqoun Barkley played horribly.  The offensive line did an excellent job run blocking, but the Eagles pushed them aside and terrorized Eli Manning all night. The Odel Beckham Jr. soap opera is another example of blaming the teams best player when he is not the issue. Eli Manning, as great as he has been in his career, looks like a washed-up gunslinger who is out of bullets. The Giants got a great player in Barkley but the decision to give Manning one more year seems like a disaster.

The defense has been equally inept. Eli Apple seems to be fighting everyone, and the tackling has been poor. Pat Shurmur has a lot of work on his hands, and one must wonder if he doesn’t hear the clock tick on his job. He deserves patience but the New York fan base has none. If the team continues to have terrible performances like against the Eagles last Thursday night, Pat might be a coordinator somewhere else soon. The Giants will be in Atlanta on Monday night. There is a chance to put up big numbers against a struggling Falcons defense. The Falcons (2-4) are four and a half favorites against the G-men at home, and the series is even at 12 games apiece.

30. ARIZONA CARDINALS (1-5) Last Week: 30th

The Cards are improving in some areas, but surprisingly it was the defense that let them down in Minneapolis. Somehow the Cards let the inept running game of the Vikings get 195 yards on the ground. They did create another turnover for a score. However, giving up 27 points on the road with a rookie quarterback is a recipe for a loss. David Johnson continues to be average but one bright spot is the play of Christian Kirk who was noticeable getting open against a stingy Vikings defense (6 catches for 77 yards).

The Cardinals will be in Denver tonight to face the (2-4) Broncos. This might be the worst matchup for the Cardinals historically who have lost eight of the ten matchups with one ending in a tie. This will be another learning curve for Josh Rosen (626 Yards 55.6 % 2 TD’S) who hasn’t played that bad after relieving Sam Bradford of the starting duties.

31. SAN FRANCISCO 49ers (1-5) Last Week: 32nd

Did the 49ers lose in heartbreak fashion on Monday night? Yes, they did. Like many teams, the failure to stop Aaron Rodgers late in a game lead to a loss at Lambeau Field. The team played hard, and a lot of positives come out of this loss, which is why they moved up the rankings. No team in the NFL has been hit with so many injuries. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan deserves credit because his team comes to compete every week.

C.J. Beathard to his credit has played well (892 yards 6 TD’s 5 INTs 87.3 Rating) since coming in for injured Jimmy Garoppolo. How long will this last, nobody knows? The issue with the 49ers is the defense. It’s frustrating because they get pressure and sacks but the secondary has been awful. Yes, this does include a past his prime Richard Sherman. Next up for the 49ers  for week seven, is the best team in football, the Los Angeles Rams (6-0). When it pours downhill, you are 1-5, the Rams are next of course.

32. OAKLAND RAIDERS (1-5) Last Week: 31st

Well, Jon Gruden said his team is not tanking. That’s great.  Gruden grinders getting up at 4 am to put together a dated offensive system. I like Coach a lot.   He is a stand-up guy, but this team is brutal and the worst in the NFL. His offensive gameplan is old, and the team is somehow worse than it was last year. Getting embarrassed across the pond in London 27-3 to a beleaguered Seahawks team is disgusting. I’ve said this all along, Derek Carr looks like a lost soul. Is he fixable? Well, that is what Jon Gruden is supposed to do. He looks like he has regressed from last year. If you listen to talk radio, the marriage of Gruden and the fans are in a state of divorce proceedings.

As far as the defense, they are minus 66 point differential – the worst in the league. It’s ugly, and the lack of depth is the fault of the entire organization. Hey, Khalil Mack says hi from Chicago. The good news for the Raiders is that they cannot lose this weekend. Oakland is enjoying a Bye week. When they get back on October 28th, the equally inept Colts will be in town. It will be a chance for the Silver and Black to get a win.

Teams that are knocking on futilities door:

Buffalo Bills (2-4), Denver Broncos (2-4), Atlanta Falcons (2-4)

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 8: Bowl Games and CFB Playoffs Up For Grabs

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 8

The Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 8 is based on three things: quality wins, schedule played, and dominance. The “eye test” and preseason rankings are not factored into the Unafraid Show’s rankings. I know some of you are used to the biased rankings, but you won’t find those here.

The Pac-12 conference had another strong performance on the national scene. Washington and Oregon lived up to all the hype, and the entire country got to see two of the nations best teams. Well, sort of… The game was on ESPN2 in the south.

Take a peek at last week’s rankings here.

12. Oregon State (1-5)

Oregon State comes off a BYE and plays Cal in Corvallis. The Beavers look to get their first Pac-12 conference win since November of 2016. Their offense has not been the problem this season. They are #1 in the Pac-12 in rushing at 211.8 yards per game, and #3 in total offense with 453.7 ypg. Oregon State’s defense has consistently undone all the great work their offense has done. They are dead last in the conference in scoring defense, rushing defense, pass defense, and total defense.

I am not sure how you win a game with those kinds of stats. Hopefully, head coach Jonathan Smith’s defense has made some adjustments over the BYE week.

11. Cal (3-3)

After the first three weeks of the season, Cal was looking like a team that could end up in a bowl game. After dropping three straight games against Oregon, Arizona, and UCLA, their bowl game chances look bleak. The Golden Bears defense was highly ranked and appeared to be the strength of their team through their first three games. Last week’s 37-7 loss to winless UCLA has to be concerning for head coach Justin Wilcox.  They gave up 37 points to the worst offense in the Pac-12. This week Cal has to try and stop Oregon State’s #1 rushing offense in the Pac-12.

Cal’s offense has to step it up. They rank #11 in the Pac-12 in both scoring offense (23.0 ppg), and passing offense (214.5).

10. Arizona (3-4)

Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate did not finish last week’s game against Utah, and head coach Kevin Sumlin said he will not play Saturday at UCLA. Rhett Rodriguez, son for former Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez, will get the start. Rodriguez should give Arizona a boost in their passing efficiency but is nowhere near the dynamic athlete running the ball that Tate is.

The Wildcats have a 3-4 record because they are statistically middle of the road Pac-12 offense and bottom third defense. This game against UCLA will be a pivotal game in deciding whether Arizona gets a bowl game.

9. UCLA (1-5)

Bruins are relieved to know their team will not go defeated this year (0-12). Chip Kelly found a way to get his team which ranks last in the conference in points per game to score 37 points against Cal. UCLA has a chance to get their second win in a row against a struggling Arizona team. The game seems to be slowing down for true freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He looks more comfortable passing the ball and continues to show flashes that he can be a special player.

The last two games have catapulted UCLA from the worst rushing offense in the Pac-12 at under 100 yards per game to 9th. Their defensive improvement has been a pleasant surprise. Bruins held Washington in check and shut Cal down in their last two games. Can they put together three straight solid defense games?

8. Arizona State (3-3)

The most intriguing team in the PAC-12 this season has been Arizona State. I am still not sure what to make of Herm Edwards’ team. Are they more the team that beat Michigan State or are they the team that lost to San Diego State? ASU comes off of a bye week and gets a huge test with Stanford coming in town. Manny Wilkins and their offensive coordinator have to find a way to get N’keal Harry the football more.

7. Stanford (4-2)

I am absolutely sure that David Shaw and the smart guys at Stanford did a lot of analytics number crunching over their BYE week. The “intellectual brutality” offense we are familiar with seeing has struggled to run the football. The Cardinal are typically one of the top-rated rushing offenses in the country and the Pac-12. However, injuries to Bryce Love and poor offensive line play have their offense only managing 85.7 rushing yards per game. Their inability to run the football keeps them in 3rd and long situations which have translated to a Pac-12 worst 32.9% 3rd down conversion rate.

Stanford must rebound after ugly losses to Notre Dame and Utah. However, they still control their own destiny in the Pac-12 North but must win out.

6. Colorado (5-1)

People tried to convince me that Colorado was a real threat to win the Pac-12 after starting 5-0. The Buffaloes suffered a bunch of injuries in the USC game, including their mid-season All American wide receiver Laviska Shenault. But, they weren’t winning that game if everybody had remained healthy. Statistically, Colorado is top four in the Pac-12 in scoring offense, scoring defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency, opponent first downs, and a whole bunch of other categories. The reality is their opponents have a combined record of 12-25.

The Buffaloes travel to Seattle to battle the Huskies on Saturday. A win would go a long way to ensuring Mike McIntyre is the coach next season.

5. Utah (4-2)

I could not believe my eyes. Utah scored 40 points in consecutive games. It appears Kyle Whittingham’s team has turned a corner offensively. Tyler Huntley is being efficient passing the ball, and Zach Moss is 3rd in the Pac-12 in rushing with 102 yards per game. Granted, they played a beat up Stanford team and a defensive disaster in Arizona. The Utes defense is for real. They lead the conference in opponent first downs, scoring defense, and total defense.

The Utes get a huge home test against USC this weekend. If they win, they will have a shot to earn their first Pac-12 South crown.

4. USC (4-2)

Clay Helton got a much-needed win against Colorado. True freshman quarterback JT Daniels did not start sharp but ultimately finished with 283 passing yards with three touchdowns. The Trojans will need to improve their -6 turnover margin on the season if they hope to keep the lead in the Pac-12 South.

USC lost their best pass rusher Porter Gustin for the season. If the Trojans can get past the next two weeks against Utah and Arizona State, their schedule appears to get a little lighter with Oregon State, Cal, and UCLA.

3. Washington State (5-1)

We will find out what Gardner Minshew and Washington State are made out of as the Oregon Ducks roll into Pullman this weekend. The Cougars boast the Pac-12’s best passing offense (413.7 ypg), and 2nd best defense in terms of yards allowed per game (313.7). Mike Leach’s ‘Air Raid’ offense is very capable of exploiting the Oregon secondary that ranks 10th in the conference in defensive pass efficiency.

2. Washington (5-2)

The Huskies are a top tier football team. They were a missed 37 yard FG away from beating Oregon for the 3rd straight year. Now, Washington looks to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss against their bitter rival Oregon. Teams are 0-5 on the season after playing a physical game against the Ducks. Chris Peterson is a great coach and should have his team up for the task against Colorado. Their defense continues to show up and be tough. The Huskies offense must improve their explosiveness. The lack of big plays seems the difference between the 2017 and 2018 Huskies teams.

There is still a chance the Huskies can win the Pac-12 and play in either the Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl.

1. Oregon (5-1)

The Ducks have earned the #1 spot in the Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 8. They gutted out a win against a very good Washington team. Oregon suffered a major injury in the against Washington. Their true freshman left tackle Penei Sewell is scheduled to miss significant time with a leg injury.

Justin Herbert continues to lead the conference in passing efficiency (171.2). The Ducks offense seems unstoppable at this point, but their defense will get a huge test this weekend at Washington State. We saw the Ducks respond well after a tough loss to Stanford. How will they handle the success of a big win?

Oregon has positioned themselves to potentially earn a spot in the college football playoffs.

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 8: The State of Michigan Asserts Its Dominance

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 8

The state of Michigan had an unbelievable weekend. The Michigan Wolverines asserted their dominance on the defensive side of the ball in a blowout victory over Wisconsin. Michigan State pulled a rabbit out of their hat and escaped Penn State with a last-second victory. Now, the in-state rivals will face each other this Saturday in East Lansing with huge Big Ten implications on the line. Where do both teams fall in the Big Ten Power Rankings Week 8? Find out below

Here are last week’s Big Ten Power Rankings for reference.

14. Nebraska (0-6)

Lost to Northwestern, 34-31

Nebraska, you were so close to winning your first game! Northwestern had to score 10 points in under 6 minutes in the fourth quarter to tie the score, where the Wildcats pulled out the win in overtime. Will Scott Frost win a game this year? This week, they will have an excellent chance to win as Minnesota comes into town.

13. Rutgers (1-6)

Lost to Maryland, 34-7

I’m running out of things to say about Rutgers. They just don’t belong in the Big Ten. The competition is too stiff, and they play in the harder side of the conference with Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, and Michigan. That’s just not fair. Then again, Rutgers was blown out by Kansas and Buffalo, so this team can’t beat anyone right now. In three years under Chris Ash, Rutgers has lost a staggering 15 out of 24 games by more than 20 points. Hot seat: Chris Ash. Rutgers hosts Northwestern on Saturday.

12. Illinois (3-3)

Lost to Purdue, 46-7

Did I jinx Illinois? Last week, I said it’s time to start “Bowl Watch” for Illinois after accumulating three wins. This past Saturday against Purdue, they were steamrolled from start to finish. After scoring the first touchdown of the game, Purdue scored the last 46 points of the game to win handily. Unfortunately, Illinois has to travel to Camp Randall to play a Wisconsin team that will be looking to take out their frustration after a blowout loss to Michigan. Pray for the Illini.

11. Minnesota (3-3)

Lost to Ohio State, 30-14

If we’re honest, I was super impressed with Minnesota this past Saturday. They hung around the entire game against Ohio State in Columbus. Going into the game, Ohio State was averaging 56.75 points per game at home and beat teams by an average of 40.25 points. Minnesota held Ohio State to 30 points and only lost by 16. Moral victories don’t win games, but they help build programs. I’m starting to believe in PJ Fleck. Minnesota travels to Lincoln to play Nebraska on Saturday.

10. Indiana (4-3)

Lost to Iowa, 42-16

Indiana had another chance to beat a quality Big Ten opponent but was blown out of their own building against Iowa. Indiana is now 1-3 against conference opponents with their one win coming against Rutgers. The bottom line is that Iowa’s defense pushed Indiana’s offense around especially at the line of scrimmage. Indiana only rushed for 67 yards on the day. Indiana will have another chance to beat a top-notch Big Ten opponent when they welcome Penn State to Bloomington on Saturday.

9. Purdue (3-3)

Beat Illinois, 46-7

Purdue scored 46 unanswered points this past Saturday after falling behind 7-0 to Illinois. Don’t look now but Purdue is now 3-3 after beginning the season 0-3. The offense has been the key to the turnaround as the Boilermakers are averaging just below 40 points a game during their three-game winning streak. Purdue has a chance to shock the country if they can pull off the upset victory at home on Saturday night against Ohio State.

8. Maryland (4-2)

Beat Rutgers, 34-7

Dominate on the ground and be efficient through the air is going to be Maryland’s ride or die offense. The Terps running game exploded once again for 290 yards and 1 TD. However, quarterback Kasim Hill only accumulated 76 yards through the air, but it resulted in 3 TDs. I still do not believe this formula can beat the top teams in the conference, but it’s lead to 4 wins so far including a standout victory over Texas, so I can’t argue it doesn’t provide results. Maryland will turn heads if they defeat Iowa in Kinnick on Saturday.

7. Northwestern (3-3)

Beat Nebraska in OT, 34-31

The Wildcats won their second straight game after scoring 10 points in the final 5:41 to force overtime, where they eventually defeated the Cornhuskers on a field goal. Quarterback Clayton Thorson continues to put the Wildcats on his back and deliver in big situations. Thorson finished with a career-high 455 yards and three touchdowns. Northwestern will look to make it 3 in a row on Saturday against Rutgers.

6. Wisconsin (4-2)

Beat to Michigan, 38-13

Wisconsin had a chance to separate themselves from the rest of the pack in the Big Ten with a win over Michigan. However, the Badgers put up a dud on Saturday night and lost by 25 points. Credit to Michigan’s defense for holding the Badgers running game to 183 yards as opposed to their average of 269.7. It’s no secret in how to beat Wisconsin. Stack the box and make quarterback Alex Hornibrook throw the ball. Against Michigan, Hornibrook threw for 100 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs for a QBR. of 0.7 (!!!). The Badgers are going nowhere if that poor play continues. Wisconsin plays at home against Illinois on Saturday.

5. Penn State (4-2)

Lost to Michigan State, 21-17

Penn State just can’t buy a break. In 2017, Penn State lost in heartbreaking fashion to Ohio State and Michigan State in back-to-back weeks. History repeated itself in 2018 as Penn State once again lost in heartbreaking fashion to Ohio State and Michigan State in back-to-back weeks. James Franklin needs to figure out how to close out games if they ever want to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Penn State travels to Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

4. Michigan State (4-2)

Beat Penn State, 21-17

Will the real Michigan State please stand up? Two weeks ago, the Spartans looked lost in all facets of the game after losing to Northwestern at home. This past Saturday, the Spartans rallied back in the fourth quarter to win the game on a Brian Lewerke touchdown pass with 19 seconds left to defeat the Nittany Lions. It’s crazy how in one week, the entire outlook of your season changes. Michigan State now controls its own destiny and can make the Big Ten title game if they win out. The Spartans take on the visiting Wolverines in a battle for state supremacy on Saturday.

3. Iowa (5-1)

Beat Indiana, 42-16

After 7 weeks, I did not expect Iowa to be the third best team in the Big Ten, but here we are. Unlike Wisconsin, Michigan State, or Penn State, Iowa is consistent and rarely plays down to their competition. Iowa beats the teams they are supposed to beat and you can’t fault them for that. The defense has always been the team’s strength, but after a 6 TD day from quarterback Nate Stanley, the Hawkeye offense is starting to hit its stride. Iowa takes on Maryland at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.

2. Michigan (6-1)

Beat Wisconsin, 38-13

Michigan is the second best team in the Big Ten. That is not up for debate anymore after throttling Wisconsin this past Saturday night, 38-13. The Wolverine defense is arguably the best in the country. Michigan is first in the Big Ten in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, and passing defense. Dominant is an understatement. Expect a defensive slugfest on Saturday as the Wolverines travel to East Lansing to take on their in-state rival, Michigan State.

1. Ohio State (7-0)

Beat Minnesota, 30-14

Dwayne Haskins throws for over 400 yards and multiple touchdowns. Ohio State wins by double digits. Have you heard that story before? That’s because it happens almost every Ohio State game. This game was closer than expected, but Haskins’s 412 yards and 3 TDs were too much for Minnesota as the Buckeyes remain undefeated. Haskins is first in the Big Ten in total offense with an average of-of 340 yards per game, which is 50 more than second place. Ohio State travels to red-hot Purdue on Saturday night. Expect a huge and raucous crowd for the Boilermakers.

In a perfect world, Michigan and Ohio State win out the rest of the year and face each other in late November for a trip to the Big Ten Title. However, this is college football. Anything can happen.

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 7: Here Come The Wolverines

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 7

Week 6 in the Big Ten was full of many lopsided games. The closest game was Northwestern’s upset victory over Michigan State, 29-19. This week, two of the top teams will square off as Wisconsin travels to the Big House to play Michigan on Saturday night. The whole conference will be watching because it will have a significant impact on the Big Ten title race. There is a clear #1 in the Big Ten Power Rankings Week 7, but the rest are neck and neck.

Here are last week’s Big Ten Power Rankings for reference.

14. Nebraska (0-5)

Lost to Wisconsin, 41-24

It’s getting harder to defend a team that has zero wins. Using “Scott Frost will eventually turn this around” is starting to get old. I know that he will probably turn it around, but it likely won’t be this season. No one thought Nebraska would be 0-5 right now. If you search the schedule, it’s becoming harder to pinpoint a game where they can get their first win. Nebraska travels to Northwestern on Saturday.

13. Rutgers (1-5)

Lost to Illinois, 38-17

The only reason why Rutgers is not ranked last is because Nebraska has zero wins. Otherwise, Rutgers would occupy that spot. Rutgers could not build on the momentum from a week ago and instead, scored 0 points in the second half on their way to a 38-17 defeat. If Rutgers ends the season with one win, I don’t see Chris Ash returning as the head coach. Rutgers plays Maryland in College Park on Saturday.

12. Illinois (3-2)

Beat Rutgers, 38-17

Illinois bowl watch has begun! Behind a huge rushing day from running back Reggie Corbin (137 yards), Illinois blew Rutgers out 38-17. The story of the day was AJ Bush Jr. The graduate student got his first career start on Saturday, and he did not disappoint. 116 yards on the ground, 2 TDs, and one passing TD is a great debut. Illinois plays at home against Purdue on Saturday.

11. Minnesota (3-2)

Lost to Iowa, 48-31

What began as a promising 3-0 start has quickly turned into 3-2 after the Golden Gophers lost again on Saturday to the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes. Minnesota’s secondary without Antoine Winfield has been a disaster as they allowed Nate Stanley to pass for over 300 yards and 4 TDs. Freshman Zack Annexstad threw for 3 touchdowns but continues to turn the ball over in losses (3 INTs against Iowa). Things will not get any easier for Minnesota as they travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State.

10. Purdue (2-3)

Bye

Can Purdue continue their offensive hot streak? The Boilermakers have scored more than 30 points in their last three games (2-1 record). Purdue will look to make it three straight wins against Illinois on Saturday.

9. Maryland (3-2)

Lost to Michigan, 42-21

Great start, bad finish. After a first-quarter kick return touchdown, Maryland was winning 7-3. Maryland did not score again until the 4th quarter, and by then, it was too late after Michigan scored 28 unanswered. I can’t stress this enough. If Maryland cannot pass for more than 100 yards per game (73 against Michigan), it will be extremely hard to win games. Maryland plays Rutgers at home on Saturday.

8. Northwestern (2-3)

Beat Michigan State, 29-19

My hand is up. I was in the crowd that thought Northwestern was dead in the water after their heartbreaking loss to Michigan a week ago. I was wrong. Northwestern rallied behind an inspired Clayton Thorson performance to beat Michigan State by double digits in East Lansing. Keep in mind that Northwestern only rushed for 8 yards. However, behind Thorson’s 373 yards and 3 TDs, the Wildcats beat the Spartans for the third straight year. Northwestern will look to win their first home game of the year against Nebraska on Saturday.

7. Indiana (4-2)

Lost to Ohio State, 49-26

The final score does not indicate just how close this game was. Ohio State needed their A-game versus the visiting Indiana Hoosiers. Indiana had the lead early and was only down 28-21 at halftime and 35-26 in the fourth quarter. Indiana needed to be perfect to beat the Buckeyes.  They weren’t but did get a tremendous effort from Peyton Ramsey (322 yards and 3 TDs). The Hoosiers gave up over 455 yards through the air and simply did not have enough firepower down the stretch.

6. Michigan State (3-2)

Lost to Northwestern, 29-19

I did not expect this result. Despite only allowing Northwestern to rush for 8 (!!!) yards on the day, the Spartans could not stop quarterback Clayton Thorson, who carved up the Michigan State secondary for 373 yards and 3 TDs. Not having running back LJ Scott proved to be detrimental to the Spartans. Michigan State has to figure things out quickly before they travel to Happy Valley to take on Penn State.

5. Iowa (4-1)

Beat Minnesota, 48-31

The Iowa offense scored 48 points in their win against rival Minnesota to keep the Floyd of Rosedale pig in their possession. If you are shocked that a Hawkeyes offense scored 48 points, then you are not alone. Quarterback Nate Stanley was terrific on his way to 314 yards and 4 TDs. Despite surrendering 31 points, the Hawkeyes defense forced four turnovers. You better believe that Iowa will be the biggest fans of Michigan on Saturday night as they hope to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive. Iowa will travel to play Indiana on Saturday.

4. Wisconsin (4-1)

Beat Nebraska, 41-24

This is the Wisconsin team that we expected to see. Run the ball, control the time of possession, and physically wear down their opponent. Badgers Running back Jonathan Taylor finished the game with 24 carries, 221 yards, 3 TDs. Wisconsin won the time of possession battle 35:33 to 24:27. On the downside, the Badgers secondary was shaky as they allowed 407 yards through the air to the Cornhuskers. Wisconsin will need to fix things on that side of the ball when they travel to Michigan on Saturday night.

3. Michigan (5-1)

Beat Maryland, 42-21

Remember when Michigan lost to Notre Dame? It’s starting to become harder and harder to remember that Week 1 letdown against the Irish. Ever since that game, Michigan has rattled off five straight wins with an average margin of victory of 28.2 points. The defense is in a groove despite missing star Rashan Gary last game. However, if Shea Patterson throws for 282 yards and 3 TDs like he did against Maryland, the Wolverines are dangerous. Michigan plays at home against Wisconsin on Saturday night in a game with huge Big Ten implications at play.

2. Penn State (4-1)

Bye

Penn State had an extra week to rest coming off of a brutal home loss to Ohio State. Expect to see a motivated effort from the Nittany Lions as Penn State will look to get back on track against Michigan State on Saturday afternoon in Happy Valley.

1. Ohio State (6-0)

Beat Indiana, 49-26

Dwayne Haskins has been very good at quarterback. His stats look like he’s playing in a video game right now. Haskins stat line in the win vs. Indiana: 33/44, 455 yards, 6 TDs. If Haskins continues to play at an elite level, the question should not be if Ohio State can win the Big Ten. It should be if they can win the National Championship. I will be shocked if Ohio State is not undefeated going into their November 24th game against Michigan. Ohio State plays Minnesota in Columbus on Saturday.

As long as Ohio State continues to play at this level, it will be hard to knock them off the throne of the Big Ten Power Rankings Week 7.

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 6: Contenders and Pretenders Reveal Themselves

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 6:

The Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 6 is based on three things: quality wins, schedule played, and dominance. The “eye test” and preseason rankings are not factored into the Unafraid Show’s rankings. I know some of you are used to the biased rankings, but you won’t find those here. Respect is not given, it is earned.

Take a peek at last week’s rankings here.

12. UCLA (0-4)

(L) Colorado 16-38

I believed UCLA had a shot to beat Colorado coming off their bye week. The Bruins put up a fight for the first half, but then it all went left after halftime. Their defense appeared to either tire out or lose mental focus in the second half. The schedule only gets rougher for Chip Kelly’s team for the rest of the season. I am not sure where this team finds a win. They can’t go 0-12 right?

11. Oregon State (1-4)

(L) 24-52 Arizona State

There are two stats that give you a lot of insight into the 2018 Beavers. Oregon State has allowed their opponent’s explosion plays of 30 yards or more 14 times in their first five games, which is worst in the Pac-12. They are also getting outscored by an average of nearly 15 points per game. Both of those stats mean there are only two things wrong with the Beavers: their offense, and their defense.

1o. Arizona (2-3)

(L) USC 20-24

Arizona has been doing a decent job of scoring since their disastrous first two games against BYU and Houston. Their biggest problem this season has been their defense. The Wildcats are only forcing turnovers on 5.9% of their opponent’s drives. And are only getting a sack on every 24 pass attempts. The good news for Arizona is that none of the teams in the South are particularly tough, and they still have a chance to win the division. However, the likelyhood seems low at this point.

9. Utah (2-2)

(L) Washington State 24-28

The Utes had their highest scoring game of the season last week (against a team not named Weber State). Their defense continuously shows up, but their offense fails to score enough points. It is always tough to win a lot of college football games when you only score 22 points per game. It is time to accept that the Utes are the same team they have been for the last 3-4 years.

8. Arizona State (3-2)

(W) Oregon State 52-24

The Sun Devils beat Oregon State soundly, as they were supposed to do. I’m still unsure what to make of a team that beats a pretty highly regarded Michigan State team only to turn around and lose the next week to San Diego State. Over the next month, Arizona State has Colorado, Stanford, and USC on the schedule. They could either go 3-0 or 0-3. This team is the best in the conference in turnover margin at +5. So, that should help.

7. Washington State (4-1)

(W) Utah 28-24

The Cougars offense is impressive. My heart says Wazzu looks like a top five Pac-12 team, but my head remembers their best win is against Utah. The Cougars only give up one sack every 58 pass attempts. The next closest team is Arizona State with one sack for every 35 attempts. If Washington State can continue to keep Gardener Minshew upright, they could knock off one of the North division heavy hitters.

6. USC (3-2)

(W) Arizona 24-20

The only reason USC has three wins is that they have the more talent than the teams they played. They are doing everything that typically results in losses. The Trojans are 11th in the Pac-12 in turnover margin, average under one touchdown pass per game, and give up the second most explosive plays of 30 yards to opponents. A lot of people are high on the Trojans winning the Pac-12 South; I am not. The team is talented enough to finish the season 10-2 but are more likely to finish 8-4.

5. Cal (3-1)

(L) Oregon 24-42

The Golden Bears have to figure out their quarterback situation. It is clear their offense is more explosive with Brandon McIllwain under center, but Chase Garbers is a better passer. Their defense is good enough to keep them in games, but their offense has to step up. Cal had a good start to the season, but the road only gets tougher from here. They still have games against Washington, Washington State, and Stanford left on the schedule. Cal is well coached, but they are short on talent to be highly competitive in the north division.

4. Colorado (4-0)

(W) UCLA 38-14

Colorado has earned their seat in the #4 slot of the Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 6. However, I do not trust they are good enough to run the gauntlet ahead of them. Through four games, their offensive and defensive stats have been very impressive. But all four of their wins are against sub top 50 college football teams. If they can get past Arizona State this weekend, I will trust them more.

3. Stanford (4-1)

(L) Notre Dame 17-38

The Stanford offense and defense looked exactly the same against Notre Dame as it did against Oregon through three quarters. They were dominated. I am truly questioning my prediction of Stanford winning the conference. Bryce Love is injured and KJ Costello looked rather average against a good Notre Dame team. The Cardinal are trending in the wrong direction. But I realize David Shaw is good for 10+ wins per year, so he should get things turned around.

2. Oregon (4-1)

(W) Cal 42-24

Oregon bounced back from one of the most heart-breaking losses in recent memory. Teams often let a loss like that affect the next game, but the Ducks didn’t. This team is physical and talented. There is an outside chance this team could pull and Alabama and make the College Football Playoffs without winning the conference. Oregon is the best team in the conference offensively, and one of the best defensively as well. All eyes will be on their matchup against Washington in two weeks.

1. Washington (4-1)

(W) BYU 35-7

The Huskies have earned the top spot in the Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 6. Jake Browning had another solid week against BYU. Washington’s defense seems to be getting more and more stingy each week. They are best in the conference against the pass and have only allowed two explosive plays over 30 yards through five games. Oregon and Stanford are the only two teams that actually stand in the way of the Huskies winning the conference.

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 6: Buckeye Magic in the Air

Big Ten Power Rankings Week 6

Billed as the Game of the Year in the Big Ten, after the dust settled, Ohio State scored 2 TDs in the final seven minutes to knock off Penn State, 27-26. The Buckeyes are the undisputed kings of the Big Ten. Can anyone defeat Ohio State before the year is over? Both Michigan and Michigan State might have something to say about that. The cream is rising to the top in the Big Ten Power Rankings Week 6.

Here are last week’s Big Ten Power Rankings for reference.

14. Rutgers (1-4)

Lost to Indiana, 24-17

On the bright side, at least Rutgers didn’t lose by 40 points. Things were not looking good for the Scarlett Knights when they entered the 4th quarter down 24-7. However, Rutgers showed some heart the other day and outscored Indiana 10-0 in the fourth quarter to only lose by a touchdown. This was a huge moral victory for Rutgers. Can they keep the momentum going? Rutgers plays Illinois at home on Saturday.

13. Nebraska (0-4)

Lost to Purdue, 42-28

Things have gone from bad to worse for Scott Frost as the Cornhuskers fell to 0-4 despite 582 yards of offense. The offense has been humming, but the defense can’t stop a nosebleed. Bright spots have been quarterback Adrian Martinez, who had 414 all-purpose yards and 2 TDs and running back Devine Ozigbo, who rushed for 160 yards and 2 TDs. It will be a few years before Nebraska starts competing for Big Ten titles, and Frost will turn it around, but for now, wins will be a few and far between. Nebraska plays Wisconsin on the road on Saturday night.

12. Illinois (2-2)

Bye

After the bye week, Illinois sits at 2-2. So far, Lovie Smith’s team has shown promise. The Illini are still a season or two away from taking the next step, but if this team can make a bowl game this year, that would be a huge success. Illinois travels to New Jersey to take on Rutgers in a very winnable game.

11. Northwestern (1-3)

Lost to Michigan, 20-17

Northwestern offense gets off to fast start. Northwestern takes the lead early. The offense stalls and struggles for the rest of the game. The defense can’t make key stops late. Northwestern loses. Rinse and repeat. That exact formula has happened in all three of the Wildcats’ losses with the one to Michigan being the toughest pill to swallow. Northwestern jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the 2nd quarter before the Michigan defense shut down the Wildcats as the Wolverine came from behind to win 20-17. That could have been a win that changes the season for the Cats, but instead, it’s another heartbreaking loss. Things don’t get any easier for the Wildcats as they travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State.

10. Purdue (2-3)

Beat Nebraska, 42-28

The Boilermakers are on a roll as they dropped 42 points in their win against Nebraska. Quarterback David Blough continues to accumulate a high number passing yards (328 against Nebraska), but the running game was the story as the Boilermakers rushed for 188 yards and 4 TDs. After a disastrous start, Purdue heads into their bye week with two straight wins and serious momentum.

9. Minnesota (3-1)

Bye

After a bye week, it’s time for the young Golden Gophers to grow up. If Minnesota surrenders over 400 yards of offense like they did in their last game, it will be a long season for PJ Fleck. Minnesota travels to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday to play Iowa.

8. Maryland (3-1)

Bye

It’s no secret that Maryland lives and dies by the run. The Terps average 258.5 yards on the ground, which is 10th overall in the nation. However, Kasim Hill will have to get better as a passer for the Terps to win important games. Speaking of important games, Maryland has a gigantic chance to send shockwaves throughout the conference when they take on Michigan at the Big House this Saturday.

7. Indiana (4-1)

Beat Rutgers, 24-17

The score indicates a close game, but Indiana was winning 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Credit to Rutgers for making this a touchdown game late in the fourth quarter, who was coming off two embracing blowout losses. Quarterback Peyton Ramsey was 27 of 40 for 288 yards with 1 TD as well as rushing TD. This will go down as a conference win, but Indiana will have to learn to finish games to make some noise in the Big Ten. Indiana has a huge test on Saturday as they travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State.

6. Iowa (3-1)

Bye

Just like Penn State, Iowa does not control its own destiny. The Hawkeyes have to win out and pray Wisconsin loses two conference games in order to win the Big Ten West. Iowa travels to Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.

5. Michigan State (3-1)

Beat Central Michigan, 31-20

Similar to their in-state rival, Michigan State’s defense is elite. However, the offense is still a work in progress. Michigan State jumped out to a 31-3 lead, but the offense stalled in the fourth quarter and the defense experienced a few hiccups as Central Michigan scored 17 unanswered points. However, a win is a win. With a dominant run defense (ranked first in the country against the run 40.3 yards per game), the Spartans can hang with any team in the Big Ten. Michigan State plays Northwestern at home on Saturday.

4. Wisconsin (3-1)

Bye

Wisconsin still controls their own destiny in the Big Ten West. Win out, and they will play for another Big Ten Championship. If quarterback Alex Hornibrook can play like he did at Iowa, the Badgers can compete with any team in the conference. Wisconsin plays Nebraska at home on Saturday night.

3. Michigan (4-1)

Beat Northwestern, 20-17

Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships. After allowing Northwestern to jump out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, the Michigan defense pitched a shut out the rest of the game, allowing less than 100 yards of total offense for the final three quarters as the Wolverines scored 20 unanswered points to survive on the road. The offense struggled mightily, but this was a game that Michigan needed to win. Shea Patterson and Karan Higdon did just enough for the Wolverines to squeak out a W. Survive and advance. Michigan plays Maryland at home on Saturday.

2. Penn State (4-1)

Lost to Ohio State, 27-26

Finish. It’s a word that Penn State can’t seem to comprehend as they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to their rivals Penn State. Despite losing the game, Trace McSorley was the best player on the field Saturday night in front of a record-breaking crowd in Happy Valley. The senior quarterback set a school record with 461 yards of offense including 175 on the ground. However, between questionable play-calling and the inability to tackle late, the Nittany Lions will now have to win out and pray Ohio State loses two conference games to play in the Big Ten Championship. Penn State has a bye this week.

1. Ohio State (5-0)

Beat Penn State, 27-26

For the second year in a row, Ohio State used Buckeye magic to erase a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to defeat conference rival, Penn State. Ohio State was dead in the water in the first half as the Nittany Lions pushed the Buckeyes around on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins threw 2 TDs in the final seven minutes to complete the comeback and stamp Ohio State as the best team in the Big 10. This game not only meant that Ohio State is in the driver’s seat for the Big Ten, but this win puts the Buckeyes in the driver’s seat for the College Football Playoff. Ohio State takes on Indiana in Columbus on Saturday afternoon.
